Hello Fellow Pacific North Westerners!

It truly has been a beautiful August and I feel blessed to have been able to spend several weekends outside in nature. While the events of the last several months have been unexpected to say the least, they have forced me to think about what I hold most dear and how I spend my energy. This time of reflection has brought about a renewed appreciation for my health, my family & friends, my team, and my clients. Thank you for your support of Matt, myself, and all of the Team here at Guardian. We want you to know that your overall satisfaction and safety continue to be our top priorities and we look forward to serving you throughout 2020 and beyond. Last month we asked our readers to send us uplifting stories of positivity and goodwill found in their local communities. Right off the bat one of our clients encouraged us to check out Lisa Gillotti and Build a Bus Home, a not-for-profit project that provides basic hygiene services to low income individuals living in Thurston County. We had the opportunity to speak with Lisa and learn more about the Build A Bus Home Project and how it got started. Cutting straight to the issue, Lisa explained how the lack of affordable housing in Olympia, Yelm, and surrounding cities is adding to the surge of homelessness. In it’s original form, BABH was designed to act as a mobile lounge and business center for those in need, but since the outbreak of Covid-19, Lisa and her team have shifted their focus to provide hygiene based services like mobile showers and sinks. By giving a retired Fire Department Shower Trailer new life, BABH is able to provide the homeless community of Thurston county with 6 separate shower stalls, all socially distanced for the user’s safety and privacy. To further promote cleanliness guests are provided with a personal bottle of Briotech gifted by Briotech.Inc, one of BABH primary sponsors.

The impact Lisa and Build A Bus Home has had on the community is astronomical in value! Not only are they providing people within the community with the gift of a warm shower and hot water, but they are helping stop the spread of potential disease and illness. This non-profit doesn’t plan to stop with just providing mobile shower stalls- they are actively seeking funding to complete the renovation of the lounge and business center bus. Lisa’s long term goal is to bring much-sought-after resources into a central place, making it easier for people obtain the services they need without having to travel long distances.

Can You Install A Roof In The Rain?

The roof is a vital component of your home. You need it to stay in good shape to ensure your home is protected from rain, wind, hail, snow, and other outside elements. Since your roof forms the first line of defense against these elements, it can deteriorate over time and require repair or replacement. The big dilemma many homeowners who live in wetter climates face is whether it’s possible to install a roof in the rain.

While it’s always advisable to schedule roof repair and replacement projects during favorable weather conditions, some emergency damages may not wait any longer for the weather to improve. If you’ve started your roof replacement process and it suddenly begins to rain, you may be tempted to continue through the rain. Professionally, it’s not advisable to install roofs when it’s raining. Here are the reasons why you should not install shingles in the rain:

1. Shingles Won’t Fasten Properly

Other than increasing the likelihood of fungal and organic growth in your roof’s interior, rainwater will interfere with the installation process. Shingles are not designed to be installed under wet conditions, and many underlayment components will be susceptible to water damage.

2. It Can Void Your Roofing Warranty

Most manufacturers often provide service warranties for their roofing materials. However, improper installation can void the warranty coverage. There are sets of installation requirements your contractor must follow to keep the warranty active, and working under harsh weather conditions could easily void your warranty.

3. Dangerous for Workers

Shingles and other roofing materials will obviously become slippery under wet conditions. This can become even riskier if sheets of ice form on your roof during colder months. A reputable contractor won’t allow their roofers onto a wet roof in the rain because of the higher risk of injuries. It’s best to consult your local roofer before scheduling major roofing projects during wet seasons.

What You Need To Know About Metal Roofs

Metal roofs have long been used on commercial properties, but their popularity in residential use is increasingly growing. While they’re not storm proof, metal roof systems are resistant and strong. A modern residential metal roof is less prone to damage from water, hail, wind, fire, and lightning.

Fire

With the dangers of wildfires, a metal roof will prove to be a good investment. Metal roofs are the most fire-safe of all types of roofing materials.

Unlike petroleum-based asphalt shingles and wood shake, metal is generally noncombustible and offers your home a high degree of fire protection. Metal roofs carry a Class A fire-resistant rating, the highest possible.

Wind

Strong winds can happen anywhere, but when an extreme windstorm hits an area, many homeowners are left with some degree of roof damage. Metal is an extremely durable roofing solution which delivers great protection from strong winds. They can withstand gusts of wind of up to 140 mph.

Metal roofing systems consist of large interlocking panels which resist uplift caused by high winds.

Lightning

Contrary to popular belief, metal roofs do not increase the risk of lightning strikes. Lightning seeks a direct path to ground, which explains why telephone poles and trees attract lightning. Metal roofs are structural components with no direct path to ground.

If metal roofing happens to get struck by lightning, it provides better protection than conventional roofing materials as it safely disperses the energy. Since metal is fireproof, a strike is much less likely to start a fire.

Hail

Hail can break, tear-off, and split conventional roofing materials, resulting in hefty repair and replacement costs. It would take a large piece of hail to cause such problems to a metal roofing system. Metal roofs are tough and strong enough to withstand considerable hail damage.

In a very severe storm, there’s the risk of hail causing dents and punctures on the surface, but the damage is significantly less than with other types. It’s also easier to detect damage and have it repaired right away.

Water

Metal roofing can prevent water damage. Due to the interlocking panels, metal roofing systems have fewer entry points of water and they are also not susceptible to uplift. Snow and ice easily slide off since metal conducts heat from the sun. This saves your home’s structure from additional weight and also reduces the risk of damage from melting snow.
