It’s that time of year again! Guardian is kicking off our yearly coat & jacket drive in partnership with the One Warm Coat Organization! Over the last 27 years the One Warm Coat Organization has helped facilitate over 34,000 coat drives, which has resulted in the donation of 6,116,416 coats. Wow!

Last year Guardian received over 350 donated coats, which we were then able to give to 4 different nonprofit organizations, including a local women’s shelter. This year we hope to exceed last year’s numbers. If you have a gently used coat, jacket, or sweater that you no longer have use for, please consider donating it to our drive! Together we can help those less fortunate stay warm this winter!

We know DIY’ing is all the rage right now and who doesn’t love a good home improvement project from time to time? While we all appreciate the opportunity to roll up our sleeves and tackle a problem head on, sometimes the best (and the safest) thing to do is call a professional.

In honor of Thanksgiving, we are giving you 3 telltale signs straight from our Comprehensive Roof Diagnostic Form that you need to put down the hammer and call a professional.

Visible Roof Damage – Buckled shingles, missing shingles, or shingles with severe granules loss are key example of when your roof may need professional services. Buckling and absent shingles can lead to roof leaks, and if not addressed, the rotting of the wood beneath. Granule loss is caused by the drying out of the asphalt on your shingle, leading granules to become dislodged and loose. This occurrence is normally found on an older roof and is a sign your shingles are wearing out and need to be replaced. All of these signs can be discovered by looking at your roof from a distance, or if shingles and granules are found on the ground around the perimeter of your home.

Moss, Algae, & Leaves – It’s normal for debris to accumulate on your roof throughout the fall and winter, or after a big storm. However, if left on your roof for an extended period of time that debris can cause major problems. Moss and algae are plants that grow roots, which in turn dig into your shingles causing exposure, water damage and granule dislodgement. Roof debris like leaves and pine needles promote the growth of algae and can clog your gutters and downspouts, preventing proper water drainage.

Insulation – If you have noticed that your home is not retaining heat or it takes longer to heat in general, you might be under-insulated. Homes are only required to have a specific amount of insulation put in during construction, but often that amount is not equal in relation to the size of the home or the exterior conditions. If you are unsure if your home is under insulated another good indicator are hot floors/ walls in the summer and cold floors/walls in the winter; this indicates that the temperature outside is permeating your home, instead of being kept out.

If your home is suffering from any of these warning signs, please don’t risk your safety or your time by attempting to fix them on your own. Call Guardian today and let us help you so you can get back to enjoying the Holidays!

This month’s featured review:

“You made commitments and followed through on them. I knew what to expect and that is what happened. I appreciate the communication. The work is top notch and they left my place with no additional clean up needed by me. I’ve used them in the past for small repairs and the experience was the same. That is why they were my only choice when I needed to replace [my roof]. Highly recommend.”

It’s officially Harvest Season! It’s the time for pumpkin carving, corn maze adventures and buying bags and bags of candy for the neighbor kids who will come knocking on your door Halloween night.

Halloween always brings back so many fun memories for me, especially those of when I was a kid. We didn’t have a lot of money back then so our costumes were usually a hodgepodge of whatever we could find in our parent’s closet. One year in particular stands out in my mind; my parents had volunteered to sell raffle tickets for the PTA at our school carnival, but my mom got sick that morning. My dad, ever the comedian, decided that he would dress up as my mom so that both of our parents would be represented at the carnival. I don’t know who made the call that my dad and I would wear the same blue eye shadow that night, but I’m sure glad I have a Polaroid picture as evidence (see below).

Years later, my kids now raid my closet for costume ideas as October 31st draws nearer. Do you and your family still dress up for Halloween? What was your favorite costume? Guardian wants to know! Tell us on Facebook!

Roof Cleaning: Leave It To Guardian

As a homeowner, most of us have a long list of “to-do” items. We all like the sense of accomplishment when a project gets done, but those home projects take time. After a while, some items may get overlooked. One of these things is roof maintenance. Regular roof maintenance is necessary for your roofe to be safe and perform it’s waterproofing duty. But, since we aren’t up there very often, it gets forgotten. And, in the Pacific Northwest, the roof can accumulate moss, mold, and mildew. Unlike some jobs on your “D-I-Y” list, cleaning the roof is best left to the professionals.

The biggest reason you should have Guardian perform your roof cleaning is safety.  Being on your roof brings a significant risk of falls All it takes is stepping on a small branch or a loose shingle to lose your footing. Many falls simply occur from carelessness or inexperience. If you don’t set the ladder just right or carelessly take a misstep, you’re suddenly falling to the ground. And, that fall may mean a trip to the hospital. Stepping onto a ladder climbing off a roof adds the difficulty of not being able to see where you are stepping. There is also the risk that the ladder falls BEFORE you get on it. And then, you will be stuck up on the roof. Your roofing experts have all the necessary safety experience and equipment to get the job done quickly and safely.

Roof and gutter cleaning is not terribly complicated, but it isn’t exactly straightforward either. Properly cleaning and maintaining your roof and gutters requires proper attention and diligence. While your gutters may seem like they are easy to clean, it’s more than just snooping out the leaves. Your downspouts need proper cleaning, tooo. You can’t just drag your garden hose up there and use the water to flush them out. The clogged downspouts might just back the water up under the shingles. A higher pressure flushing is needed. And, dragging a house up and down the ladder increases the risk of slipping. Also, whenever your gutters are cleaned, they should also be inspected to ensure they are attached securely at the correct angle. Clean gutters are worthless if they can’t actually collect the water and drain effectively. Your roofing professionals can also spot any potential problems, like water damage, during their inspection.

In the Pacific Northwest, our climate is perfect for moss, mold, and mildew growth. You might think that cleaning a roof requires pressure washing. Pressure washing causes damage to the roof and peels layers of weather fighting roofing away. Cleaning your roof this way will shorten the life of your roof and cause leaks.

Some roofing companies offer chemical roof cleaners. You can also find D-I-Y homemade cleaning recipes. But, most roof cleaners are toxic. And, those corrosive chemicals on your roof may temporarily halt the growth of moss, nold, and mildew, but are very harmful to your roof and the environment. IThose chemical roofing solutions also must be applied in the exact amounts and evenly across the entire roof surface. If not, all of the growth won’t be and you’ll leave unsightly blemishes. Now your roof isn’t completely clean and your curb appeal is gone.

Hiring a professional to properly clean your roof or gutters is not that expensive. It is likely to be less expensive than doing it yourself, given the safety and efficiency issues. There is also the cost of your time.  You would have to make trips to the store for the chemicals, get set up and clean your roof and gutters. And, then the time to clean up afterwards. After all that, you look at your work and realized you missed spots. Even worse, you may have damaged your shingles or flashing in the process or gotten hurt. That adds up to costly repairs, medical bills, or time off from work.

What you need is a non-abrasive, non-toxic Guardian expert to clean and preserve your roof. Guardian Roffing’s exclusive process uses non abrasive cleaning methods that will not damage your roof. We use a concentrated preservation spray material that is made exclusively for roofing that our installers are certified by the manufacturer to mix for your application. And the biodegradable antifungal preservative we use will kill existing moss and algae and keep it away for up to 5 Years Guaranteed!*

The Guardian Gazette: September 2019 Newsletter
Happy September Friends!

Among my circle of family and friends, the month of September is synonymous with two things, the first being the Puyallup Fair. Though it has since been re-branded as the Washington State Fair, this once-a-year family exposition still boasts the same rides, fair food and amusements that I enjoyed as a child (as did my children), when it was still known simply as the Puyallup Fair.

The 2nd thing that comes to mind when I think of September is the drastic change in weather. The wind and rain of Fall are unavoidable and your roof typically takes the brunt of foul weather. Guardian wants to make sure you and your home are prepared and protected. If you suspect your roof has issues or you simply want confirmation that your roof is prepared for the rough weather ahead, call Guardian! Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are ready to help!

Let us worry about your roof so that you can focus on the more enjoyable things of September, like hot kettle popcorn and bird’s eyes views from a Ferris Wheel.

*Don’t forgot to visit the Washington State Fair, open now until September 22nd!*

Every year, the prestigious editorial releases to the public a list of the best roofing contractors in the areas of commercial, residential, and industrial. Making the List, which is now in its 11th year, has become extremely competitive as more and more roofing contractors use it to set themselves apart from others in the industry.

This year Guardian Roofing secured #111 on the list of 150, moving up from #120 in 2018, and #90 in 2017. With well over 100,000 registered roofing contractors spread out across the country, standing out as one of the top 1% for the last 3 years in a row is an honor and a privilege.

We are so excited to be included in this list,” said Guardian’s General Manager Matt Swanson. “Our guys love being able to show prospective clients our ranking. It helps solidify us in the client’s mind as being a company that is not only vetted and certified, but trustworthy as well. Making the Top 150 List is like Christmas morning to a roofing contractor”.

Guardian would like to thank their employees for all their hard work and dedication, and their clients for placing their trust and their homes in Guardian’s hands. We couldn’t have made the Roofing Contractor Top 150 list without you!

After A Fire

No one wants to think about a home fire. But, they do happen. A fire in your home is devastating both physically and emotionally. In addition to damage to your home, you could lose valuable possessions and irreplaceable personal items, like baby pictures and family heirlooms. So, every homeowner needs to take steps to protect your property and your family. If there is a fire, you will have to recover your losses and heal from the damage. But, after any traumatic event, you don’t have to manage everything by yourself. Ask family and friends to help you with some of the steps you’ll need to take to repair the damage. Their help and support will shorten your long to do list and lift your spirits.

Your first step to recovering from a fire is prevention. You can’t always prevent a fire from happening, but you can increase your family’s safety and minimize the potential damage. Creating a fire escape plan and practice it with your family can help them keep a cool head and get out quickly. Adding smoke alarms in your home and keeping them properly maintained will speed your reaction to a fire. Some security systems have the capacity to detect a fire and automatically notify emergency services, So, your only focus can be escaping the fire as quickly as possible.

This checklist serves as a quick reference and guide for you to follow after a fire occurs.

  • If you own your house or you have renter’s insurance, contact your insurance company for detailed instructions on protecting the property, processing your claim, and contacting fire damage restoration companies. And, notify your mortgage company of the fire. If you are renting, contact the home’s owner.  If you do not have renter’s insurance, private organizations may be able to provide aid and assistance.
  • Contact any family members that may not have been in the home. Let them know what happened and let them know that everybody is okay.
  • Contact your local disaster relief agency, like The Red Cross, if you need temporary housing, food and medicines.
  • Confirm that you home is safe to enter with the fire department. Be aware that structural damage may have been caused by the fire. The fire department should confirm that utilities are either safe to use or are disconnected before they leave the site.  DO NOT attempt to reconnect utilities yourself, have a professional plumber and electrician perform a thorough inspection and repair.
  • Conduct an inventory of damaged property and items.  Do not throw away any damaged goods until after an inventory is made. Having photographed or documented your valuable items in advance and stored in a fire safe location will aid in processing your insurance claim. Some homeowners videotape the entire home to document items and their location.
  • If your valuable documents and records weren;t stored in a fire safe location, try to locate them or obtain copies.  It would be great to have receipts and bank statements of purchased items.
  • Begin saving receipts for any money you spend related to fire loss.  The receipts may be needed later by the insurance company and for verifying losses claimed on your income tax.

In the event of a fire, remember that every second counts, so everyone must be prepared. Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly. No one wants to have to clean up and repair the damage after a fire, but Guardian is here to help.

When your home is ready for a new roof, repairs, or maintenance, you need a reliable, dependable roof repair company. You count on you roofing contractor to keep your home safe and dry. Guardian Roofing is committed to providing top-quality service, professionalism and workmanship.

Sunshine and Shade and Water to Wade

Happy August! It’s one of the last months of summer yet I feel like it was the 1st of June just yesterday. Pretty soon the kids will be going back to school, blow-up pools will be packed away, and we’ll all be swapping out our sandals for rain boots.

While the beginning of a new season is exciting (bring on those pumpkin spice lattes!), the closing of one can be a little bit sad. That’s why it’s so important to make the most of these last Pacific Northwest summer days. Fire up that barbecue, slather on that sunscreen, and cannon-ball into that pool!

I recently came across a children’s poem that made me smile so wide I knew I had to share it with you.

Why I like Summer

It’s sun and shade, it’s water to wade

It’s frogs and bugs, it’s grass for rugs

It’s eating outside, it’s a tree-swing ride

It’s tomatoes and corn, it’s dew in the morn

It’s warm starry nights, it’s road-trip sites

It’s a hot sunny sky.

It’s summer, that’s why!

From all of us here at Guardian we hope you and your family enjoy the month of August! It has been our privilege to serve you in the Summer, Fall, Spring and Winter.
